FORSYTH COUNTY — While some may be heading off to the beach or shores of Lake Lanier this weekend, many Forsyth County residents will be spending their holiday weekend at home.
Local stores are ready to help them get ready for those backyard barbecues.
“Memorial Day is the first holiday for grilling in the Atlanta area,” said Brenda Reid, a spokeswoman for Publix super markets.
“Customers can expect to find everything they need at Publix to put on a fun and festive backyard cookout.”
John Will, owner of Ferguson’s Meat Market in north Forsyth, said this week is always a busy one for his business.
“Everyone’s ready to get out and grill,” he said. “As we move into Thursday and Friday, we’ll have a lot of people in here getting all their food for their cookouts and get-togethers.
“When it starts getting warm, that just makes everybody start wanting to be outside.”
Reid said Publix stores will be stocking up on family cookout favorites, such as corn, potato salad and whimsical items such as red, white and blue cupcakes.
Of course, there will also be plenty of old standards, such as hot dogs and hamburgers.
Ferguson said his customers will be stocking up on those items, as well as others like shrimp, steaks and ribs.
“We’ll even have a lot of people buying our barbecue for parties,” he said, noting that the weekend will kick off one of the busiest times of the year for him.
“Memorial Day weekend is the start of the season when everybody wants to get together around the grill.”
