The owners of a painting company in Cumming have been selected as the best franchisees in the company’s nationwide network of stores.

Scott Specker, owner of Cumming’s Five Star Painting, was recently selected as the company’s franchisee of the year and received other honors as well at the 2017 Dwyer Group International Conference in Orlando, Fla.

“They look for someone that follows their system, that embraces the franchise system and works well with others and performs well [and] as high growth,” Specker said. “By the grace of God, they picked me.”

Specker was selected as top out of some 180 franchises, including nine in metro-Atlanta, and the Top Gun award is given to owners who achieve top sales and reach certain operation benchmarks. Only about 10 percent of franchises are Top Gun recipients, like Specker was.

“I was shocked,” Specker said. “I didn’t know what to expect or not expect.”

This isn’t the first time Specker has been recognized by the company. He was selected as rookie of the year when he started with the company four years ago.

“It’s cool,” Specker said of both recognitions. “All that says is that I’m trying to be someone who doesn’t think they know everything, so we’re constantly learning and training our people and working with our vendors.”

Specker said Five Star Painting exists under Dwyer’s Neighborly Company, which has an emphasis in the local community, and the local franchise works with programs at South Forsyth High School, Bald Ridge Lodge and other local groups.

“We are pretty tight-knit with our community,” he said. “I worked with a global company before, and I really wanted to be a local company that works in the area where I live. It meant a lot to me to be able to network and join with local companies to be able to really provide a better company.”

He said faith also plays a strong role in the company.

“We try to do a lot,” Specker said. “We are a Christian-based company, so I think that makes us a little bit different than other brands ... we try to live out our values. We try to live out who we are and what we believe.”

In a news release, Mary Kay Liston, president of Five Star Painting, said Specker and his wife, Sharon had what the company was looking for in franchisees.

“Scott and Sharon understand that working with other Dwyer Group franchisees isn’t only the neighborly thing to do, but also good for their business,” Liston said. “By following the Five Star Painting system, the Speckers have seen tremendous success. Franchisees like them represent the bright future of the brand across the country.”
