Sawnee Electric Membership Corp. has announced a move that will lower power bills through the remainder of 2010.

According to a report from the corporation, Sawnee's board of directors approved a reduction in the wholesale power cost adjustment, or WPCA, billing factor effective Oct. 4.

It is estimated the reduction will save Sawnee's 130,000 members more than $6 million total.

A typical residential household should see a savings of about $15 per month, though exact savings will be based on use.

Blake House, vice president of member services, said in a statement that Sawnee EMC knows "many of our members are seeing challenges and we want to do all we can to assist them."

"Especially after such a brutally hot summer that contributed to above normal energy bills, coupled with the fact that so many people in our area are struggling financially," he said.

The WPCA billing factor is used to address various costs not recovered through the standard rates that each member pays.

For 2010, the billing factor was about $30 per month for the typical residential consumer.

Headquartered in Cumming, Sawnee EMC serves seven counties in north Georgia.
