CUMMING — Sprouts will officially open its first location in Forsyth County today.

The store, which occupies the former Stein Mart department store site in Cumming’s Lakeland Plaza, features organic, natural and local foods that support a variety of diets including gluten-free and vegan.

“Since day one, our mission has really been to make health living available to all,” said Maggie Fearnow, senior director of marketing for the Arizona-based fresh concept grocer.

The Cumming site was originally scheduled to open in 2014, but was delayed last spring so the company could focus its efforts on preparing stores in Dunwoody, Johns Creek, Norcross and Snellville.

“About 85 to 90 percent of our store is either natural or organic, and we have really differentiated ourselves by making that affordable,” Fearnow said. “We don’t think eating fresh fruits and vegetables should be a luxury.”

According to Fearnow, the store has been well-received since the initial announcement in early 2014.

“Since before the first store, we’ve had so much demand coming from the Cumming community, so we’re really excited to be here,” she said.

Fearnow attributed much of the interest to the availability of locally grown foods at reasonable prices.

“We do carry a lot of local products from the Atlanta area and the Southeast region in general,” she said. “Obviously, the big difference here is going to be coming into the store checking out the prices and seeing them for yourself.”

The store’s opening day will feature 20 percent off for the first 200 shoppers, a free reusable bag and $1 deals. In addition, every 15th visitor will receive a free coupon booklet.
