Dominique Sheffield got an unexpected surprise Tuesday when a car slammed into the side of the gym where she was working out.

Neither Sheffield nor anyone else at the Bodyplex on Bethelview Road was injured in the morning collision. However, the building was evacuated while officials checked its stability.

"I was upstairs running and I heard a loud crash through my headphones and when I looked down the first part of a car had gone through the wall," Sheffield said.

"It was in the gym and bricks and stuff had flown everywhere."

Sheffield said the vehicle came to a stop between the gym’s tanning beds and nursery.

Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said the vehicle, a Lexus sedan, crashed into a set of exit doors on the side of the building.

He said the driver, whose name he did not have, was shaken up but not injured.

"The building did suffer cosmetic damage, structurally it is sound … and [the] vehicle had extensive body damage as well," Shivers said.

According to a sheriff’s report of the incident, it appears the driver accidentally accelerated while approaching the building.

The Lexus struck two other vehicles before striking the gym.

Shivers said the business was able to remain open Tuesday.

"We are placing tarps over the outside of the hole to keep the wind and rain out of the building," he said, adding that the business owner had contacted a contractor to cover the hole until it can be repaired.

Shivers said the fire marshal’s office was also notified to ensure there were enough available exits for the building’s capacity.
