CUMMING – A two-vehicle collision on Canton Highway (Hwy. 20) near its intersection with Sawnee Drive sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries and temporarily closed the westbound side of the highway Monday afternoon.

The accident, which occurred at about 1:40 p.m. on April 17, involved a dump truck and a 2004 Cadillac Escalade, according to Cpl. Pete Sabella, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Sabella said initial reports of the crash indicated it was a serious accident, prompting the Traffic Specialist Unit, or TSU, to respond, but that only minor injuries were actually caused.

“Once TSU is out there, they aren’t just going to turn around and leave,” Sabella said, “so they investigated and, basically, the Escalade was waiting to exit Waffle House when the dump truck driver went into what she thought was a turning lane, but then realized it didn’t go all the way through.

“She attempted to reenter the westbound lane as the Escalade was attempting to pull out, and the right front of dump truck hit front driver’s door of the [Escalade].”

The dump truck driver was not injured.

Sabella said the man in the Escalade was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

No charges or citations had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
