A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after a head-on, two-vehicle wreck early Friday in Cumming that authorities said also involved a Forsyth County Sheriff's deputy.

According to a sheriff's report, the incident happened about 6:19 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Boulevard and Industrial Park Drive.

Deputy Ronald P. Rush, 60, of Cumming was on his way to work, the report said, when he lost control of his Ford Explorer and crossed over the centerline, striking a Ford Mustang.

The Mustang was driven by Noe Garcia-Lopez of Kemp Drive in Cumming, the report said. Both men were traveling alone.

Rush and Garcia-Lopez both had to be cut from their vehicles and were taken by ambulance to North Fulton Hospital.

Rush was treated for his injuries and released. Garcia-Lopez remains at North Fulton Hospital in critical condition, according to the report.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation.

Rush, who has been with the sheriff’s office since 2002, works in the Court Services Division.
