CUMMING — The driver and passenger who escaped injury Monday in a crash on Ga. 400 near Cumming were arrested later that day after authorities found several suspected drugs in the wrecked vehicle and elsewhere.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about noon that a northbound 2005 Buick Rendezvous sport utility vehicle had left the road and went down an embankment just past where the highway crosses Lake Lanier.

The driver, 25-year-old Shandra Rose Volkman of Dahlonega, told deputies she lost control of the vehicle after it blew a tire.

That detail was corroborated when a deputy observed a flat front passenger tire, according to a sheriff’s report.

However, the deputy found the seatbelts for the front seats were locked down, “showing that they were not worn during the wreck. This was contrary to what the occupants told me earlier.”

The car traveled more than 150 feet before getting wedged against several trees.

None of the three occupants — Volkman, 29-year-old Eric Lon Roderick of Dahlonega and a small child in a safety seat — reported injuries.

The deputy noted in the incident report that he saw a “vacuum seal type bag” with suspected marijuana from the front driver’s window.

Both Volkman and Roderick were placed under arrest for possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana.

After they were released to the custody of the Forsyth County Jail, the transporting deputy discovered two bags containing suspected methamphetamine and 18 Oxycodone pills in the back of his patrol car.

Roderick and Volkman were each subsequently charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance for the pills, possession of methamphetamine, failure to use seatbelts and a penal offense of unlawfully crossing guard lines with drugs.

As of Wednesday, the suspects remained in custody. Bond for each was listed at $29,590.

Roderick’s mother came to claim her son’s cell phone “so that she could assist with the bonding process,” according to the sheriff’s office. It was not noted whether the child was released into the woman’s custody.

It also remained unclear whether the two suspects, who listed the same address, are the child’s parents.
