DAWSON COUNTY - A Dawson County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in an altercation that led to gunshots Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Chevron on Ga. 400 near McDonald’s.

According to Sheriff Jeff Johnson, a DCSO sergeant had dropped a man off at the Chevron following a courtesy ride and was giving him money when the suspect began to assault him.

During the assault, a third party shot the suspect, Johnson said. The suspect then fled to the McDonald’s parking lot where he assaulted an elderly woman.

Additional citizens at the McDonald’s detained the suspect until officers arrived, Johnson said.

The elderly woman was also struck in the head and transported.

The suspect was also transported to an area hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound.
