Local authorities say that three suspects were taken into custody late last week after they were allegedly found in possession of drugs, “burglary tools” and a loaded firearm.
According to Cpl. Doug Rainwater, spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Ricky Character, 19, of Lithonia, Terrell James, 23, of Stone Mountain, and Avontre McNair, 22, of Covington, were arrested by deputies at 1:20 a.m. Friday, May 24 after a man was seen running across Buford Highway to a waiting vehicle.
Rainwater said after deputies saw the man run across the road, nearly being hit by a vehicle, they investigated and found a pickup truck occupied by three individuals. He said that when deputies witnessed smoke billowing out of the truck’s windows, they approached and conducted a consensual search of the vehicle.
During the search, Rainwater said the deputies found marijuana, a substance they believe to be ecstasy, a loaded handgun and suspected burglary tools, including a “window punch” for breaking glass quietly and quickly, numerous long screwdrivers, boxes of latex gloves, backpacks and sets of dark clothing.
Rainwater said that upon further inspection of the suspect’s vehicle, deputies also discovered that the vehicle’s VIN number had been tampered with and the Georgia temporary tag was invalid.
Eventually, he said they found the vehicle had previously been reported stolen out of Montgomery, Ala.
“This is consistent with burglary and entering auto thieves we have seen, they will steal a vehicle and place a temporary tag on it,” he said. “They had everything you would need to burglarize or steal a car, they just didn’t have the chance to do it.”
McNair, the vehicle’s alleged driver, has been charged with theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, removing motor vehicle serial number in order to conceal the identity, possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He is being held in the Forsyth County Jail under a $45,065 bond.
Character has been charged with theft by receiving stolen property, possession of Schedule 1 narcotic, possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He is being held under a $27,850 bond.
James has been charged with theft by receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He is being held under an $11,110 bond.
As of Thursday evening, all three suspects were still in sheriff’s office custody.
