CUMMING — Cumming Post 307 of the American Legion will host an author and expert on the Civil War next week.

On Monday at 7 p.m., the post will welcome local historian Joseph P. Byrd IV as a keynote speaker for their monthly meeting at the Georgia Army National Guard Readiness Center.

During his presentation, Byrd will discuss one ancestor, Maj. William E. Simmons, and detail his encounters in the war, including battles in Gettysburg, Fredericksburg and Sharpsburg.

Byrd also authored a book on Simmons titled, “Confederate Sharpshooter Major William E. Simmons: Through the War with the 16th Georgia Infantry and 3rd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters.”

He is a seventh-generation Georgian, who can trace 15 relatives to service in the Confederate Army.

The local American Legion post meets on the second Monday of each month. The readiness center is located at 100 Aquatic Circle, off Pilgrim Mill Road.
