CUMMING – A Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in an on-duty shooting late Sunday night when he reportedly was confronted by a man with a knife at the Shady Grove RV Park near Cumming.

When deputies arrived at a recreational vehicle Sunday, Jan. 8 about 11:22 p.m., a suicidal man reportedly approached them with a knife, according to Cpl. Pete Sabella, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

The park is located near Lake Lanier off Browns Bridge Road (Hwy. 369).

“The male subject began to threaten the deputies when the knife within a residence,” Sabella said. “One of the deputies was forced to fire his agency-issued sidearm, striking the subject.”

He was transported to an area hospital, but Sabella said his status is not known because the Georgia Bureau of Investigation took the case over.

Procedure calls for the GBI to investigate officer-involved shootings.

The deputy involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is also routine.
