The drama teams from Forsyth Central and West Forsyth high schools are headed to state competitions in middle Georgia later this month after winning top regional honors.

West took home first place victory for its musical, "A Year with Frog and Toad" at the Region 7-AAA competition, held Nov. 1 at Gainesville High School.

The group will give an encore presentation of the production at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $7 per person, with proceeds helping to fund the team's Nov. 15 trek to the state competition in Gray.

Also headed to state is Central, whose performance of "Dark of the Moon" won for Region 6-AAAA. Next up for the drama team is the state Class AAAA competition in Bleckley County, southeast of Macon.

"The students are very excited," said Central drama director Yatesy Harvey.

West drama publicist Paula Jones credited director Eric Gray for his involvement and "drive." She said the young thespians were "ecstatic."

"We're kind of like the underdogs in this one," Jones said.

Region honors for West included: best ensemble winners, Anastasia Bandemir, Matt Salvatore and Alison Owens; best supporting actor, Marcus Terry; best actor, Mitchell Jones; all-star cast, Emily Diamond and Marshall Foster; and technical director, David Johnson.

Central's AAAA awards included best actor, Jordan Mitchell; best actress, Hannah Bryson; and all-star cast, Sam Little, Avery Rabbitt and Sean Lawley.
