CUMMING — A local veterans group is encouraging area high school students to enter its annual oratorical contest, which could result in money for college.

Cumming Post 307 of the American Legion will hold the event at 9 a.m. Jan. 23 in the Forsyth County Courthouse. According to Legion member John Arant, the event is open to all high school students.

“They’ll be talking about the [U.S.] Constitution,” Arant said.  “It is a constitutional speech contest. They memorize and they give it without the assistance of notes or anything like that.”

Arant said there are several levels of competition leading up to the national event in Indianapolis.

“Bid money can be won if you go to the national competition and compete, up to $20,000 in scholarships,” he said. “But the post starts out with the small $250 award, and then it goes to the area and the district and [then state].”

Students interested in entering the competition should contact their high school counselor or the post’s erotological chair, Ron Meier, at ronmeier66@comcast.net
