Alexei S. Joya, a sophomore at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, recently took top honors when he competed with more than 650 other cadets to earn the gold medal for physical fitness.

Joya, a Forsyth County resident, is a member of the Raider Team at Riverside.

The members must display teamwork, physical fitness and discipline as they compete against teams from other schools in events such as obstacle courses, one-rope bridge-building competitions and 3- to 5-mile runs.

The Raider Team excelled at the Spalding County High School Invitational, where it brought home five trophies and Joya’s gold medal.

He finished first in the physical fitness test, which included two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups and a 2-mile run.

Joya is also a member of the band at Riverside, as well as the cross country, track and wrestling teams. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Joya and grandson of Ms. Margaret McClung.
