The Pinecrest Academy Wind Symphony earned straight superior ratings at the Williamsburg Worldstrides OnStage Music Festival at the end of April.
With only 285 students in the private parochial school on Peachtree Parkway, the band won second place overall, regardless of school size.
“Our group was one of only two high school bands that received a Gold rating for an overall superior,” said Len Insalaca, band director at Pinecrest.
Winning a Gold Award earned the group an invitation to any one of the nation’s five Festivals of Gold held in the country’s most prestigious concert halls.
The festival also awarded 10 “Maestro Awards” for students who displayed “outstanding musicianship.”
Two of these awards were given to Pinecrest students — senior Carolyne Aufleger won for her euphonium solo in “Benediction,” and senior Jacinta Tran won for her bassoon feature in “Japanese Tune.”
