Fatal wreck makes mess of Interstate 985 in all directions

OAKWOOD — Northbound and southbound lanes are shut down on Interstate 985 due to a fatal accident involving a tractor-trailer at the Plainview Road overpass.

Hall County Fire Services responded to the scene at about 6 this morning and found the truck “50 percent involved with fire.”

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office reports the driver was deceased when they arrived.

The truck was traveling northbound when it rolled over, coming to a stop under the overpass between Exits 12 and 16, according to authorities. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

Crews have since extinguished the fire and controlled a fuel leak, according to the fire department. The tractor-trailer struck the overpass, and the Department of Transportation is inspecting the integrity of the bridge, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Nicole Bailes said traffic is backed up in all directions, and an overturned box truck near Exit 8 and multiple fender benders are causing additional problems.

“It has become such a traffic nightmare this morning,” she said.

The road is officially shut down southbound at Exit 17, but Bailes recommended drivers get off at Exit 20 or even before. Northbound drivers were being directed off at Exit 12, but the box truck wreck may have changed that situation.

Bailes said crews are trying to clear up southbound lanes, but “we’re still looking at an extended period of time before that happens.”

The wreck also delayed school buses in the West Hall, Johnson and Flowery Branch clusters, according to Hall County Schools.
