DAWSONVILLE — Hwy. 53 was shut down for several hours Friday in Dawson County after a head-on two-vehicle crash involving a fire engine.

David McKee, a spokesman for Dawson County Fire Services, said the collision occurred about noon as the engine was responding to an emergency call of an "unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing" patient.”

It was not immediately clear what caused the wreck, but a car struck the fire engine near the entrance to Sundown Way, between War Hill Park and Dawson Forest roads.

The engine then went down a 30-feet embankment, according to McKee.

The driver of the car was taken by ambulance in serious condition to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

"Our two personnel have both been transported in stable condition," McKee said. "[Georgia State Patrol] is investigating.
