District 23 state Rep. Mark Hamilton was one of 15 lawmakers appointed to the House Committee on Assignments.

“I am very honored that [Speaker of the House David Ralston] has the confidence in me to participate in this process,” said Hamilton, a Republican from Cumming.

“[Ralston] told me I proved myself my first year as a chairman, that I take everything very seriously ... I think he values my objectivity and my thoroughness in analyzing situations.”

The assignments committee is a prestigious one. Those appointed are in charge of recommending all 180 representatives to the various House committees.

The committees include appropriations, which handles budget issues, and the transportation committee, on which Hamilton serves.

The House Committee on Assignments reviews requests from representatives looking to switch assignments. It also decides who should receive leadership positions within each committee.

“We’re having our first interview sessions Monday,” Hamilton said. “It’s going to be a process.

“Since the announcement has been made, I’ve already received several phone calls and e-mails from people making sure I’m aware of the positions they want.”
