A 21-year-old woman was in critical condition Thursday afternoon at Northeast Georgia Medical Center after a near drowning Wednesday night in Lake Lanier.
Maribel Juarez-Navarrete was swimming with others in an area of the lake off of Watauga Drive around 8 p.m. Wednesday when she went under the water and did not resurface, authorities said.
A friend who she was with called 911, according to Lt. Scott Ware, spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. Ware said responders believe she was under water approximately 10-15 minutes. Both the Sheriff’s Office and Hall County Fire Services responded to the call.
Capt. Zachary Brackett, spokesman for Hall Fire Services, said rescuers located the woman in cardiac arrest in approximately 5 feet of water, and she was rapidly retrieved. He said her pulse was restored before arriving at the hospital.
Brackett said responders were on scene for 14 minutes before transporting the woman to the hospital.
