FORSYTH COUNTY — Superheroes who will be in Forsyth County on Saturday morning will not be flying, they’ll be running.

The eighth annual Superhero Run, a 5K run/walk and 1K fun run is set for 8 a.m. at Fowler Park, off Hwy. 9 and Castleberry Road in south Forsyth, to benefit CASA of Forsyth County.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, is a nonprofit that serves abused and neglected children who are in Juvenile Court as a result of an adverse family situation.

Advocates act as a guardian to these children, attending meetings and hearings to speak up for the child’s best interests.

“The relationship formed between a CASA volunteer and the child becomes a stable part of an otherwise chaotic life for a child in foster care,” said Janet Walden, executive director of the nonprofit. “So often, [Division of Family and Children’s Services] case managers change, therapists change, schools change and placements change for the child.

“The CASA volunteer is the one face in the crowd that is constant during a child’s journey through the child welfare system.”

But that’s the key. They’re volunteers.

Even though advocates do not get paid for their work, it costs about $1,200 to serve one child through the CASA program and about $400 to train each volunteer advocate.

In 2015, 86 CASA volunteers advocated for more than 238 children in Forsyth County, Walden said.

The superhero run raises the funds needed to recruit, screen, train and supervise volunteers.

Entry fees for the event are $35 for the 5K run/walk and $15 for the 1K fun run. Participants who register on teams of five or more will each receive a $5 discount.

The race will be chip-timed and is a Peachtree Road Race qualifier.

The route is a flat course that goes along the Big Creek Greenway.

Awards will be given to top three male, female and age-group runners, as well as the best and most creative superhero costumes.
