CUMMING — Two Cumming residents have been selected as “Members of the Year” by Cumming Chapter 1030 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Gary Ely and Steve Masak, both Cumming residents and U.S. Army veterans, were chosen for their efforts on behalf of the organization over the last 12 months.

Billy Darby, chapter president, said the two were selected for “their outstanding dedication and hard work resulting in the success of the chapter’s fundraising activities.”

Ely, a Michigan native served in Vietnam in 1970 with the Army’s 7th Battalion 13th Artillery.

An Atlanta native, Masak served in Vietnam in 1969 and ’70 as a pilot with the Army’s 119th Assault Helicopter Company. He went on to spend 27 years in the Army.

In other news, the chapter’s December gathering was the last held at Golden Corral. The group’s membership has increased and outgrown the meeting facilities at the Cumming restaurant. Darby thanked the management and staff for their six years of hospitality.

Beginning Jan. 4, the organization will hold its general membership meetings at the Georgia National Guard Regional Readiness Center on Aquatic Circle in Cumming.

The chapter meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. All Vietnam-era veterans are invited to attend.
