A local nonprofit that encourages healthy living and self-respect among third- through eigth-grade girls is having its annual 5K run Sunday at Central Park.

Girls on the Run Forsyth is a 12-week prevention program consisting of two hour-long lessons per week in preparation for race events.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m. Organizers encourage community members to come out and cheer on the young women.

The Forsyth group is part of the national organization. According to its Web site, Girls on the Run "encourages preteen girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles through running."

Funding comes from donations, sponsorships, participant fees and in-kind donations.

Those interested in donating or volunteering in the program can contact Cathie Brugnoli at (404) 667-4101 or e-mail info@gotrforsyth.org.
