Commissioners hear update to transportation comp plan

Forsyth County has many road projects on the horizon, and county officials heard an update this week.

At a work session Thursday, Forsyth County Commissioners heard an update on the comprehensive transportation plan from Michael Kray of Jacobs Engineering.

“This is really the end of the third phase of the planning process,” Kray said. “This is the recommendations phase of the project. So, we have a number of projects recommended here.”

The plan was for road projects through 2040, when the county’s population could be higher than 400,000 residents and looks at projects in two scenarios: baseline projects already planned and fully-funded and build projects that are unfunded and recommended.

The baseline projects include the widening of Hwys. 9 and 20, Post and Bethelview roads and Ga. 400, along with managed lanes on Ga. 400, a new interchange on Hwy. 369 and Ga. 400 and projects on Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Castleberry, old Atlanta and Union Hill roads.

If approved, Kray said the build projects could provide a 30 percent reduction in future congestion.

Previously public engagement has included two online surveys, committee meetings, stakeholder interviews and 10 public meetings, two in each commission district.

Some of the public comments in the plan have included support for extending Ronald Reagan, improvements at the intersection of Post and Bentley roads and improvements at Ga. 400 exits.

For Majors Road, residents largely opposed the road widening and felt it needed more traffic lights or roundabouts instead of stop signs.

Based on those comments, some of the changes included intersection improvements at Bagley Road and Mathis Airport Parkway, Polo Drive and Post Road, Shiloh Road and Shiloh Road east and along Majors Road, while moving the widening of Majors to a watch list project.

Projected costs are $710 million for short-range projects from 2018 to 2022, $1.1 billion for mid-range from 2023 to 2030 and $400 million for long-range from 2031 to 2040 for a total of $2.2 billion.

The comprehensive plan also lays out bike and pedestrian options and possible bypasses around the city of Cumming.

No action was taken by commissioners at the meeting.
