CUMMING — Swimming is as much of a part of summer as cookouts, boating and watching baseball. But winter doesn’t have to mean the end of water fun.

Carla Wilson, facility manager for the Cumming Aquatic Center, said there is definitely a dip in attendance during the winter, but there are programs going year round.

“Our slowest time of the year is really November and December, and then once January hits we do see an increase in attendance,” Wilson said. “A lot of that is probably new year’s resolutions as well.

“But once January hits we do get a little busier every month until once we hit spring and summer, then we’re incredibly busy.”

Wilson said swimming is a great way to stay healthy as it uses all muscle groups. The center, which opened in 2011 off Pilgrim Mill Road near Exit 16 at Ga. 400, provides several classes for those interested in doing cardio, gaining muscle or getting more active.

“We have water exercise classes year round,” Wilson said. “We have a variety of classes, Power Aqua, Aqua Sculpt. We’ve got a Zumba class on Thursday nights, we’ve got an arthritis class and we have Silversneakers, which is a program that is available for older adults that are 65 plus.”

For those just learning, the center offers swim lessons, which grow in popularity as warmer weather approaches.

“In the instructional pool, we offer swim lessons year round, and those usually get really busy around the spring, so they’re starting to pick up now,” she said. “As we get closer to summer and people are starting to think about swimming and backyard pools and visits to the lake and so on, those really get a lot busier.”

Thanks to the center, those celebrating winter birthdays can have swimming parties at the indoor pool. The outdoor pool is available for summer birthdays.

“In the summer, we book cabanas, and we’ve already started booking those believe it or not,” Wilson said. “They are first-come, first-serve and they are pretty hard to get. Birthday parties at our outdoor pool are pretty popular in the summer.

“During the year, we rent out our instructional pool and we do private birthday party rentals or you can come during public swim time and rent out one of our activity rooms to do food and presents and so on.”

In addition to those who simply want to exercise, the pools are also used by the local high school swim teams and other competitive swimmers and divers

“We’ve just come to the end of high school season, so we’ve actually had meets every weekend. That’s going to let up a little bit over the next couple of months,” Wilson said. “We do still have some meets coming up, there’s the YMCA championships in February and we’ve got some other larger USA meets coming up closer to the summer.”

“We have three USA swim teams that practice here. They practice year round and we’ve got the Chattahoochee Gold, Cumming Waves and North Georgia Aquatic.”
