Cumming Country Fair & Festival breaks attendance mark

CUMMING — Another Cumming Country Fair & Festival is in the books. And it sits atop the record books, too.

With weather affecting just one of the 11 days, welcoming temperatures prompted thousands of people to take advantage of the annual event known for its rides and performances, fair organizers said.

“We had four record days and wound up with a record fair of 167,827 people,” said Dave Horton, fairgrounds administrator. “Not by much, but we did get past the record in 2013, which was 167,616.

“Any time you have a Saturday that gets hit with weather, that’s the worst. You’d rather it happened during the week. But we were just extremely pleased with the whole fair.”

According to Horton, the musical performances, ground acts and Indian Heritage Village drew especially large crowds.

“Every show I saw out there had great crowds,” he said. “The sea lions had fantastic crowds. Michelle’s Magical Poodles, the comedic juggler. Galaxy Girl always pulls a good crowd even though she’s a returning act.

“The great thing about the fair is that there are so many people each year who come to the fair for the first time. So everything is new for them.”

In 2013, all 11 days had nice weather. Last year, attendance nearly reached that threshold despite four rainy days.

The fair is the biggest event of the year for Cumming at its fairgrounds, and organizers get no time off before brainstorming begins for the next one.

“We’ll clean up and start planning,” Horton said. “And we have events every weekend [at the fairgrounds] until the second weekend of December.”
