Cumming City Council voted Tuesday night to defer collecting building permit fees until the end of the year.

Mayor H. Ford Gravitt said the incentive may “entice some developers that might not otherwise consider building in Cumming.”

There will be an application and permit deferral fee of $50 and developers have the option to pay in full before the project.

Building fees range from 10 to 40 cents per square foot, based on location and building type.

Among those that could be affected by the decision are Northside Hospital-Forsyth, which is slated to pay about $13,000 in building permit fees to add a 16,800 square-foot fifth floor to its surgical center.

Also during Tuesday night’s meeting, the Cumming City Council voted to:

• Rehire all city employees for another year and reappoint board members to their various posts.

• Adopt its 2010 budget, including a $9.39 million general fund and $11.8 million utilities department.

• Annex about 89 acres on Bald Ridge Marina Road and Ga. 400, dubbed Cannon Place.

Property is proposed as site of mixed-use project, including business service, medical and professional offices and institutional residential living and care facilities.
