Firms picked for roadwork designs

Forsyth County commissioners on Tuesday committed $2.6 million to design road-widening projects and $963,847 for intersection blueprints.

Funded by the current 1-cent sales tax, known as Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax VI, roadwork priorities were determined by a committee.

The plan calls for $215 million of a possible $275 million from the tax to go toward infrastructure improvements such as those discussed Tuesday.

The board voted 5-0 to hire contractors for the design of the following road-widening projects:

• Sharon Road from Hwy. 141 to Old Atlanta Road, $359,900 to Wolverton & Associates

• Old Atlanta Road from Sharon Road to McGinnis Ferry Road, $1.3 million to Gresham Smith

• Union Hill/Mullinax roads from McFarland to Hwy. 9, $578,415 to Gresham Smith

• Kelly Mill Road from Bethelview Road to Hwy. 371, $392,224 to Arcadis

The board also voted 5-0 Tuesday to hire Pond & Co. for the design of intersections at the following:

• Old Atlanta Road: Gilbert Road, Brannon Road, Ivey Falls Drive and Northern Oaks Drive; $198,905

• Jot Em Down Road area: Pea Ridge Road/Mayfield Drive, Hopewell Road; $168,390

• Hwy. 371: Bentley, Dickerson, Pittman, Drew and Evans roads; $247,160

• Hwy. 53: Truman Mountain and Chestatee Heights roads; $111,135

• Hwy. 9: Antioch, Fowler, Hopewell and Bannister roads; $207,735

The board hired URS to design the Lakeheath Drive and Evonvale Glen crossings with Brookwood Road at $30,532.
