CUMMING — The extension of Lanier 400 Parkway between Pirkle Ferry and Pilgrim Mill roads is scheduled to open March 1.

The city of Cumming has scheduled a dedication ceremony for 9 a.m. that day. The opening was approved by a 5-0 vote of the city council during its meeting Tuesday night.

“Everything is ready on that road, as far as the traffic is concerned, except for the sidewalk,” said Mayor H. Ford Gravitt. “We haven’t received bids back from the sidewalk, it’ll be received in March, but the road is ready for opening.”

The road, which currently ends near Forsyth County Juvenile Court, will come out on Pilgrim Mill near the Cumming Aquatic Center, University of North Georgia’s local campus, state Driver Services Center and the National Guard Regional Readiness Center.

The extension was the last in a series of projects agreed on by the governments of Cumming and Forsyth County, which contributed about $3.5 million to the effort. The project was part of a special 1-cent sales tax extension.

The other projects were the Canton Highway (Hwy. 20)-Kelly Mill Road crossing and improvements along Bald Ridge Marina Road to make way for Costco.

Earlier this year, Cumming Assistant City Manager Steve Bennet said that work on the Lanier 400 project had been slowed by the holidays, foul weather and rock deposits.

Officials have projected the final cost at $5.2 million.
