CUMMING — Crews this week began work on what will become the Mason Street parking deck near the Forsyth County Administration Building.
The five-level, 491-space facility will be the second of two parking decks being built in downtown Cumming as part of the new courthouse and jail projects. Voters approved funding for the projects in 2012 as part of an extension of the 1-cent sales tax.
To make way for the Mason Street project, a construction fence has been extended, eliminating a county employee parking area on the north side of the administration building and the loading/unloading spaces along School Street.
On the other side of the downtown square, construction of the three-level, 222-space Castleberry Parking Facility at Castleberry Road and Maple Street is complete.
City Administrator Gerald Blackburn said Thursday that the city has not taken possession of the parking deck from the county due to some drainage issues that the contractor is working to resolve, along with a few other punch list items. An opening date has not been set.
Meanwhile, weekday daytime public parking is available at several locations near the administration building. Look for the spaces marked with a red dot or view a map online at forsythco.com.
