CUMMING — The city of Cumming’s annual Veterans Day ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial on Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

“It’s the city’s annual ceremony honoring all of our veterans and active duty military,” said Crystal Ledford, a spokeswoman for Cumming. “We always hold it on Veterans Day in light of the holiday and we also have a couple different groups out there.”

The event is being organized by American Legion Post 307 in Cumming. The post’s commander, Randy McGhee, will serve as master of ceremonies.

The event also will feature remarks from Mayor H. Ford Gravitt and keynote speaker Chief Warrant Officer 5 Tom Golden, who served with the Georgia Army National Guard and during Operation Desert Shield in1991 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.

“Basically it’s just a time for the entire community to come together and honor our veterans and active duty military and just kind of express our appreciation for them and all they do,” Ledford said.

There will also be performances by Forsyth Central High’s Flash of Crimson Band, as well as the Christian Fine Arts of Forsyth and the Forsyth County Christian Home Educators Learning Co-op.

North Forsyth High’s Marine Corps JROTC will present the colors, and the Forsyth County Joint Honor Guard Rifle Team will provide a 21-gun salute.

“The homeschool groups will be doing a lot of patriotic music,” Ledford said. “There will be some patriotic readings [and] the Daughters of the American Revolution will be doing some of those.”

The event is expected to draw about 500 people, including up to 100 current or former military personnel.
