Monday is the deadline to register to vote in the July 20 primary election.

Democrat and Republican voters will be asked to choose their party's representative in races for governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. House representative and many more state and local offices.

Among the local races are two seats on the county's school board and commission.

A runoff election, which may be necessary in contests with many candidates, would be Aug. 10. The general election is Nov. 2.

Registration applications are available at the Forsyth County Election Office, online at forsythco.com and many libraries.

Applications also can be filled out when renewing a driver's license.

Residents have to provide an identification of some kind if registering to vote for the first time in Georgia.

People who don’t often vote but plan to go to the polls to vote in the primary are encouraged to make sure their information is on record and everything is accurate.

A change of name or address will affect the ability to vote.

Many offices are elected within a certain district, so where voters live often determines which races they can vote in.

Voters who have not voted in two general elections, which is normally a four-year period, likely will have their status changed from active to inactive.

After two more years of not voting, an inactive voter can be deleted from the system.
