The Forsyth County Old Atlanta Park Recreation Center will be closed Tuesday through Sunday so the gymnasium floors can be refinished.
The facility will reopen at 7 a.m. March 4.
Central Park and Fowler Park recreation centers will remain open for normal hours while the south Forsyth center is closed, said Tommy Bruce, assistant director of parks and recreation.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience during this closure,” Bruce said.
An e-mail from recreation coordinator Ritchie Anderson to center visitors states the wood sealant for the gym floors has a “strong odor” that led to some complaints.
“To protect our staff and visitors, we have decided to close the recreation center” while the petroleum-based finishing coat is applied, Anderson wrote.
During a board meeting earlier this month, parks director Jerry Kinsey said the construction company agreed to refinish the gym floors at no additional cost.
The 40,000-square-foot center, which opened in February 2012, is part of Old Atlanta Park, at Nichols and Old Atlanta roads across from Lambert High School.
The facility includes two gymnasiums for basketball and other sports, an indoor walking track, fitness studio and cardio and weight room. It also features a multipurpose room, dance classroom and community room with a kitchen.
Winter Construction simultaneously built both the Old Atlanta and Fowler centers at an estimated cost of about $9.9 million.
The funding came from the parks, recreation and green space bond voters approved in 2008, as well as impact fees charged to developers.
