Forsyth County authorities said they are trying to reach the family of an Afghan man who drowned Monday evening at West Bank Park on Lake Lanier.

The man, who was in his 20s, has been identified, but Forsyth County deputy coroner Paul Holbrook said they have been unable to notify the family outside of the country.

“The two gentlemen that he was swimming with said that he had jumped off of one of the railings into the water,” Holbrook said.

The two other men tried to find the victim before calling authorities.

Forsyth and Gwinnett fire personnel were dispatched to the park at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, and were able to quickly locate the victim, according to Division Chief Jason Shivers.

Shivers said the victim was located in shallow water very near to the location where he was last seen.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Northside Hospital in Cumming. Mark McKinnon, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirmed that the victim did not survive.
