Sawnee Drive was closed to traffic for a couple hours Monday afternoon following a spill at a gas station.
Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said about 30 gallons of gasoline spilled from one of the fuel pumps at the Citgo on Hwy. 9 and Sawnee Drive.
Some of the liquid evaporated quickly, but the rest flowed into a state stormwater runoff line, Shivers said.
Shivers said firefighters alerted the state Department of Transportation, as well as the Environmental Protection Division, to the spill.
A DOT official and a private hazardous materials mitigation crew handled the cleanup.
Shivers said officials don't think the gas made it into any state waters.
The spill occurred about 12:30 p.m. when a store employee forgot to shut off a fuel pump before attempting to change the filter, Shivers said.
As a result of the incident, motorists could not access Sawnee Drive from Hwy. 9 by the Forsyth County Public Library's main branch.
EPD spokesman Kevin Chambers said the matter is under investigation. The agency is awaiting a report on the cleanup.
