A local electric company has given awards to several local groups.

The Sawnee EMC Foundation recently awarded $18,500 to four local nonprofit groups. The funds were generated from the company’s 20,000-plus members choosing to round their monthly bill to the next dollar.

Awards were given to American Legion Auxiliary Post 307, which will use the funds to send 10 boys to American Legion Boys State; The Georgia Chapter of The ALS Association; The Place of Forsyth County, which will use the grant to focus on senior citizens, and Friends of Disabled Adult and Children, Too, which will use the grant for a home medical equipment program.

The average donation per customer is about $6 per year, and the foundation has raised more than $2.3 million locally since its inception in 2003.
