Search efforts continued Monday for a 23-year-old Florida man missing in Lake Lanier, officials said.

“We have just begun searching with sonar again … and will continue throughout the day,” said Mark McKinnon, Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesman, before 9:30 a.m. Monday.

There was still no new information just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Kevin Theodore Husum, of Panama City, Florida, has been missing since Saturday evening, when, according to witnesses, he fell off a pontoon boat in waters off Three Sisters Island, went under and did not resurface.

Since then, DNR rangers and deputies from Forsyth and Hall counties have conducted “surface searches and with sonar equipment around the clock,” a DNR news release said. “The search area is large and the water is between 40 and 80 feet deep.”

Husum was a former James Madison University and Gulf Coast State baseball player.

“We were made aware on Sunday morning of the tragic passing of Kevin Husum, an exceptional young man who was a proud member of the JMU baseball team before offering his services as a student assistant coach this past season,” James Madison Athletic Director Jeff Bourne said. “As the team and all of us in the JMU athletic department try to come to terms with this tragedy, our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.”

The operator of the pontoon boat, Kenneth Toller, of Cumming, was arrested and charged with boating under the influence and taken to the Forsyth County Jail.

The DNR Law Enforcement Division’s Critical Incident Reconstruction Team will conduct an investigation into the incident. It is expected to take several weeks, McKinnon said.

Hall County Fire Services Marine Rescue personnel also was involved in the search at one point.

Capt. Zachary Brackett, Hall County Fire Services spokesman, said a diver suffered an injury during the search and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he was listed in good condition.
