Several Special Olympics basketball teams from the metro Atlanta area will take part in a scrimmage event Sunday in Cumming.

More than 15 teams from throughout several counties are scheduled to participate in the games, which will be held from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at the Dobbs Creek Recreation Center gymnasium.

Hannah Bennett, who coaches one of five Special Olympics basketball teams in Forsyth, said the event is free and open to the public.

“We would love to have anybody who wants to come and yell for our athletes and make them feel special,” she said.

The event will help the teams prepare for state Special Olympics tournaments later in the year.

“It’s great for them to get a chance to play some real games, in a real gym, with real referees before the competitions start,” she said. “It’s a great learning experience.”

Bennett said the athletes range in age from 8 to 50 years old.

“[Coaches] divide them up into teams based on age and skill level,” she explained.

Bennett encouraged anyone looking for something to do this afternoon to come out and support the special athletes.

“It’s free and we just want people to come out and have fun,” she said.
