CUMMING — At the height of Friday night’s snowfall, Forsyth County firefighters responded to a blaze that destroyed a vacant cabin near Cumming.
Though initially called in as a barn fire, the cabin at the end of Turner Drive off Castleberry Road was fully engulfed in flames and collapsing when firefighters arrived, said Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers.
A neighbor called 911 after seeing the burning structure through the woods, Shivers said.
The dirt road, which has a few homes on it, was impassible due to weather conditions, making the property reachable only by four-wheelers and trucks.
“A decision was made to let it continue to burn and collapse because there was absolutely nothing we could do,” Shivers said.
No personal belongings were inside the cabin. Units monitored the flames to keep them from spreading into the woods.
A cause or origin of the fire has not been determined. It also was not clear whether the incident was suspicious in nature, though the investigation remains open.
The structure, about 1,200 square feet, did have running power.
Shivers said no other significant calls came in due to the weather Friday night or throughout the weekend.
As snow and frigid winds passed through the area, motorists seemed to have heeded warnings to get home early and stay off roads.
Calls were steady, Shivers said, but the volume resembled a typical Friday night.
