Vice President Joe Biden will visit Dawsonville on Thursday to make an announcement about the federal stimulus package, the White House announced today.

Biden will be joined by Gov. Sonny Perdue. During his appearance in Dawsonville, Biden plans to discuss how the stimulus program - or American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - has created jobs in Georgia and rural areas across the country.

The stimulus program, passed in the early days of the Obama administration, costs about $787 billion.

It includes federal tax cuts, expansion of unemployment benefits and other social programs, as well as domestic spending on education, health care and infrastructure, including roads and energy.

In Georgia, nearly $2.3 billion has been spent on education, $1.8 billion on health care and nearly $1 billion on roads and transportation, according to the state's stimulus accountability Web site.

Biden is scheduled to appear at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
