Nearly 90 Forsyth County students recently participated in a triathlon offered by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta and Kids Triathlon Inc.
The Atlanta Kids Triathlon, held Aug. 26 at the West Gwinnett Park & Aquatics Center, was a kid-friendly event featuring swimming, biking and running.
According to the Forsyth County Family YMCA, the goal was to “introduce kids to a healthy, positive lifestyle that encourages daily exercise, good nutrition and making the right choice.”
The children participated in two age groups: the junior division for ages 6-10; and the senior division for ages 11-15.
Twelve Forsyth County athletes placed in the top 10 of their respective age groups: Gianna Varrone; Anna Rose; Caroline Scharff; Morgan Grace Sheffield; Maddie DeLuca; Meliah Harrison; Emily Flint; Tyler Cunningham; Joshua Scharff; Nate Matthews; Will Thomas Sheffield; and Wesley Sheffield.
The Forsyth County Family YMCA offered a seven-week triathlon training program for participants signed up for the race, with 87 children taking part. The training was open to both YMCA members and nonmembers.
The sessions focused on general conditioning and techniques for swimming, biking and running.
Kerry Carithers, membership and wellness director, said in a statement that she and other staff members were pleased to offer the training sessions.
“I think it is important to show kids that healthy living can be fun and this triathlon was the perfect introduction to that message,” Carithers said.
Due to the success of the program, another triathlon training program will be held on Thursdays from Oct. 4 through Nov. 15.
