Recently we had to use the hospital for an ER visit. Total time with both the ER doctor, and with a CT scan and after triage was about 45 minutes. All other time was just waiting. We just received three bills totaling about $8,000. In terms of charges that is about $177 per minute. The visit was routine for a common issue. Is it not time for healthcare providers to report profits, organizational structures, and charges for services such as MRI, CT and visits before they are provided? Why do we have to guess and then be surprised by astronomical bills weeks after they are provided? Can hospitals and doctors compete? Why not? Health care will have to change and costs will have to reduce for those who pay and are not on medicare or medicaid.
