West Forsyth’s girls picked up their first Region 7-AAA Tournament win in school history on Monday at East Hall.

Megan Whittaker led West Forsyth with 19 points and Kelsey Turchi added 12 in a 49-43 victory against North Hall.
With the win, the Lady Wolverines advance to face the No. 1-seeded Gilmer Bobcats in the second round at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Ellijay.

“We’re a very new program, so to have this opportunity is huge for [us],” West coach Dennis Benedict said.

What may have been West’s most important statistic of the night was a 10-of-13 performance at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Whittaker hit a pair of free throws with 1:23 left in the game to cap a 10-1 Lady Wolverines’ run, extending their lead to 43-34.

“We missed too many free throws early, but we were great down the stretch,” Benedict added.

Following a three-pointer from North Hall’s McKenna Rushton, West’s Nikki Erdely caught a wide-open pass under the basket for a layup. Kelsey Baker hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Wolverines their biggest lead at 48-37 with one minute left to play.

Rushton scored a game-high 20 for the Lady Trojans (10-16).
