Mt. AIRY – It was a game of defense and turnovers for the Lambert Longhorns this week as they went on the road to take on the Habersham Central Raiders.

Despite five turnovers, Lambert prevailed with a 21-7 victory Friday to win its fifth straight and remain undefeated in Region 6-AAAAAA.

Both the Longhorns’ and the Raiders’ defenses came to play. Habersham (0-6, 0-5) intercepted Lambert quarterback Richie Kenney four times and blocked a punt. Lambert, meanwhile, held Habersham to just 241 yards of total offense.

Despite four interceptions, Kenney was otherwise effective, completing 17 of 25 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns.

Tanner Hall had 11 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown, including an impressive one-handed catch for 33 yards at the end of the first half to set up a Lambert touchdown.

“Coach just told me I was going to get the call and to just go out there and make a play, and that is what I did, I went up and I made a play” Hall said.

The rushing game for the Longhorns was successful too. Harrison Pomfret had 30 carries for 124 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Lambert got on the board with a 3-yard run by quarterback Bobby Gabriel to end a 10-play drive.

Kenney’s third interception set up a Habersham 27-yard touchdown pass, but Lambert responded with a seven-play drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown catch by Hall to make it 14-7 at halftime.

After the half, the Raiders returned the opening kickoff 50 yards and had a short field to drive on. But the Lambert defense forced the Raiders to turn the ball over on downs.

Lambert scored in the fourth quarter with about six minutes to spare on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Gillis to seal the win.

“Anytime you turn over the ball five times and you’re able to win, that says a lot about the character of this team,” Lambert head coach Louis Daniel. “Sometimes you have these games where they don’t exactly go your way, but if you prevail and win it shows the strength and character of your team.”
