North Forsyth High junior Josh Schunk made a calculated push at just the right time Tuesday. Running at the Riverside Invitational in Gainesville, and competing against athletes from 14 other schools, Schunk took the lead for the first time going up the final hill to the football stadium parking lot with about 800 yards remaining and held on to win with a new personal record of 15 minutes, 52 seconds.
“It feels great to be able to come out here and win today,” said Schunk, who broke his previous best time by almost a minute. “I felt like it was a fast course, pretty flat for the majority of the race.”
In addition to Schunk, Caleb Hall earned fifth for the North Forsyth boys (16:19), who took third place overall with 96 points behind overall-champion Gainesville and second-place White County.
The North Forsyth girls took eighth place, led by Katya Bessiere, who was 24th overall.
