Forsyth Sports graphic

Forsyth Central

Coach: Jim Blandford, fourth season

Key returners: Gillian Lloyd, Sr.; Morgan McCann, Jr.; Miranda Summersel, Jr.

Key newcomers: N/A

What to know: Forsyth Central lost eight seniors off of last year’s team, though head coach Jim Blandford has seen interest in the program grow. He notes that nearly 20 golfers tried out for the team in February, with nearly half being freshman. While the Bulldogs might endure some growing pains this season, the goal is to lay the foundation for the next few years. Senior Gillian Lloyd is the team’s top returner, and juniors Morgan McCann and Miranda Summersel should also provide leadership.

Denmark

Coach: Dan Campanale, second season

Key returners: Taya Davis, Drashti Patel, Shamitha John

Key newcomers: N/A

What to know: Denmark did not keep score last year, as the Danes were a first-year program in 2019. Head coach Dan Campanale hopes a trio of returners in Taya Davis, Drashti Patel and Shamitha John can build upon last year’s trial run. The Danes open the season March 3 against Forsyth Central.

Lambert

Coach: Shane Fortenberry, first season

Key returners: Averi Cline, So.; Rachel Burrell, Jr.; Iris Cao, So.; Elise He, Jr.; Sharon Mun, Jr.

Key newcomers: N/A

What to know: Lambert is in tremendous shape entering the season, one year after a dominant showing at the Class 7A state championship. The Longhorns finished a full 17 strokes in front of second-place Mill Creek, led by Averi Cline’s tournament-best 3-over 147. Rachel Burrell was one stroke off at 4-over 148. Both golfers return this season, as does sophomore Iris Cao, whose 15-over 159 tied her for 10th and gave the Longhorns three top-10 finishers at the state tournament. Lambert is the team to beat in Forsyth County, and in the state.

North Forsyth

Coach: Andy Martin, first season

Key returners: Annie Carpenter, Sr.; Kinsey Chapman, Sr.; Rillian West, Sr.; Grace Wood, Sr.; Margaret Montgomery, Jr.; Samantha Taylor, So.

Key newcomers: McKenzie Clark, Fr.; Hayden Mullnix, Fr.

What to know: After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the state tournament last year, North Forsyth returns an experienced group of seniors that hope to get the Raiders over the hump. Andy Martin is in his first season coaching North Forsyth’s girls golf team after assisting last year with the boys team. Senior Annie Carpenter had the best finish out of any North Forsyth golfer at last year’s area tournament, finishing tied for 24th individually with a 38-over 110.

South Forsyth

Coach: Nicole Barth, first season

Key returners: Catherine Stoerker, Sr.; Kennedy Arnette, So.

Key newcomers: N/A

What to know: South Forsyth returns its top two scorers from last year’s team that finished seventh at the Class 7A state tournament. Kennedy Arnette turned in an impressive freshman year, which featured a tie for second place at the area tournament and ended with a tie for 18th place at the state tournament. Catherine Stoerker had a team-best 15-over 159 at the state tournament, which tied her for 10th. The War Eagles will look to fill out the rest of their rotation as the season begins.

West Forsyth

Coach: David May, sixth season

Key returners: Samantha Hobbs, Jr.; Kristen Charles, Sr.; Carol Hubach, Sr.

Key newcomers: N/A

What to know: West Forsyth is thin in terms of depth, but the Wolverines do return junior Samantha Hobbs, who qualified for last year’s Class 7A state tournament as an individual, where she posted a 55-over 199. West Forsyth will see who else can step up on March 5 when the Wolverines face Forsyth Central to open the season.
