Fruitful non-region schedules, strengthening county rivalries and meaningful home-away league draws highlight themes in the 2016-17 football schedules released by the Georgia High School Association on Sunday.

Forsyth Central and Milton join Lambert, North Forsyth, South Forsyth and West Forsyth in Class 5-AAAAAAA, while Pinecrest Academy has two compelling non-region matchups against Class AAAAAAA schools in hopes of boosting reputation even more after a banner year.

Here’s a breakdown of the most interesting nuggets coming from the completed schedules:

With region schedules in the new Class AAAAAAA cut down as the tier shifts from 64 to 48 schools, more non-region slots needed to be filled. This made many coaches around the state more liberal with their scheduling decisions, willing to talk to schools from lower classifications to fill slots.

Defending Region 6-AAAAAA champ South Forsyth hast by far the toughest non-region schedule of the county schools. The War Eagles will open the season against Hillgrove in the Corky Kell Classic at McEachern High School before facing South Gwinnett and Lassiter.

South will also face its next-door neighbor, Pinecrest Academy, at home. Both of Pinecrest’s non-region games are against Class AAAAAAA schools—the other against a first-year program in Discovery.

Lambert will have two revenge games on tap with a home game against Collins Hill and another trip down the road to Lanier. Collins Hill defeated the Longhorns 35-13 in the opening round of the state playoffs last season, while Lanier completely shut down Lambert’s offense in a 17-7 win to open the season.

North will have two tough games for first-year head coach Robert Craft when they travel to Loganville and host Pickens. Both schools went 8-2 last year. The Raiders will also play a former Class AAAAAA region-foe when they visit Johns Creek.

West will be playing way down and against a state champ when it hosts Pace Academy. The Knights will play in Class AAA this season despite having a Class A enrollment (They were AA last season).West will share a common opponent with South and North, as it will visit Woodstock and host Hillgrove.

Lambert will play three of its five region games on the road—in a row—between Oct. 14 and 28. Central and West will also have to play three region road games and just two region home games.
