A couple of former Forsyth County football players are expected to have big seasons this fall in the collegiate ranks.
That’s at least according to official conference preseason elections made this past week during respective media events.
Appalachian State’s Colby Gossett and Mercer’s Sam Walker were both named second-team all-conference selections by the Sun Belt Conference, which announced its preseason team last Friday, and the Southern Conference, released Wednesday.
Gossett, a former North Forsyth lineman, enters his junior season after leading the Mountaineers to their first bowl win in school history with a win over Ohio in the Raycom Media Camelia Bowl. As a guard and tackle, Gossett helped lead Appalachian State’s balanced offense that averaged 268.8 yards on the ground and 201.8 through the air in 2015. According to ProFootballFocus.com he only allowed nine quarterback pressures as a redshirt sophomore.
Walker was an FCN all-county selection as a wide receiver in his senior season and was an Army commit before switching to Mercer before signing. Now a tight end for the upstart Bears, Walker enters his sophomore campaign as a reliable target for senior and former Mill Creek quarterback John Russ. In 11 games as a redshirt freshman Walker accumulated 25 receptions, 323 yards and two touchdowns. He had eight catches for 100 yards and both scores in the season finale against Samford. That performance helped him finish second in the conference as a tight end.
As conferences continue to release football preseason lists the FCN will continue to update readers of local selections. Feel free to let us know if any incoming selections by emailing us at email@example.com.
