Paglia: Region 6-AAAAAA baseball poised for another chaotic final week

A year ago, the Region 6-AAAAAA baseball playoff seeds weren’t determined until the final day of the regular season on a Friday.

Lambert and West Forsyth ended up tied for first place, but there was confusion about who was the official region champion (the teams were declared co-champions) and who got the No. 1 seed (Lambert did).

Johns Creek and South Forsyth were tied for fourth place, but there was confusion about who would get the final playoff spot. Coaches, players and fans waited into the early hours of Saturday morning for an answer.

In the end, it worked out for Forsyth County: all four playoff seeds went to county teams.

Forsyth won’t be so lucky this season. At 6-9 in the region, South is already eliminated from the playoffs. But it has a chance to get three of the four playoff spots. Lambert (18-5, 14-1) entered Monday’s second game of its region series against South in first place, two games ahead of Northview (18-5, 12-3) and West Forsyth (14-9, 12-3). The one hanging on a cliff is North Forsyth (14-9, 10-5), which is tied with Johns Creek (14-9, 10-5).

The final stretch to determine this season’s playoff seeds is a dream of two-game series between Lambert and Northview; North and West; and Johns Creek against a pesky Alpharetta team that dealt Lambert its only region loss so far this season.

Things could get just as confusing and compelling as last season.

After last season’s chaos, the region’s coaches tweaked the set of tiebreakers used to sort any future scenarios of chaos. So if the next week produces another maelstrom of uncertainty, here’s how playoff seeds will be determined:

1. Combined head-to-head record against all other tied teams for that spot.

2. Compare tied team’s cumulative record against teams that have already qualified for the playoffs above the tie.

3. Compare tied team’s record against team in region order of finish.

4. Fewest runs allowed in head-to-head matchup.

5. Fewest runs allowed in region play.

6. Coin toss.
