Prep Roundup: Central boys win Hall County Holiday Classsic

Forsyth Central's boys basketball team wrapped up the Hall County Holiday Classic on Saturday with a 70-64 win against Riverside Military Academy in the championship game.

Junior Joakeim Celestin led the Bulldogs with 25, while junior Jake Craft had 21 and senior Brandon Sherer added 15.

Central topped Flowery Branch 55-32 Friday in the first round of the tournament. The Bulldogs (7-7, 0-2 Region 5-7A) will face Pope at 7:15 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Hounds Holiday Hoop Classic in Marietta. 

West Forsyth 51, Glenn (N.C.) 49, OT

West Forsyth won at the last second Saturday, as senior Sterling Johnson's three-point play led the Wolverines past Glenn (N.C.) in overtime, 51-49.

Senior Jack Bock and junior Broc Bidwell each had 11 points, while Joseph Staiti led the team with 10 rebounds. Bock had seven rebounds and five assists, while Bidwell chipped in four boards and two assists. Sophomore Caleb Lesch contributed eight points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Wolverines (9-2, 2-0 Region 5-7A) are back in action at 6 p.m. Friday against Providence Day (N.C.) in the Deep South Classic at Brookwood.

Pinecrest 68, Fellowship Christian 46

Pinecrest picked up a big region win Saturday, topping Fellowship Christian 68-46.

Senior Caleb Bohn led the team with 18 points, while sophomore Tony Carpio had 17 and sophomore Oscar Lynch added 12.

The Paladins (6-5, 3-2 Region 6-1A Private) will host Benedictine at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Pinecrest Christmas Invitational Tournament.


Denmark 72, Chattahoochee 53

Denmark overpowered Chattahoochee with a 20-point first half Saturday on its way to a 72-53 win against the Cougars.

Sophomore Sophie Smith exploded for 27 points, chipping in six rebounds and two steals. Junior Clarissa Kelly added 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals, while freshman Kiersten Bell had nine points, sophomore Jessie DeNardo scored seven and junior Leah Kelly finished with seven points. DeNardo had a team-high eight rebounds, and Bell and Kelly each had three boards.

The Danes (5-7, 2-2 Region 7-4A) will face Greenforest at 1 p.m. Friday in the Battle of Buckhead.

Glenn (N.C.) 50, West Forsyth 42

West Forsyth lost its first game of the season Saturday, falling to Glenn (N.C.) 50-42.

Sophomore Kalie Thrower had a team-high 17 points, while sophomores Calie Thrower and Cayla Cowart each had 10 points.

The Wolverines (13-1, 2-0 Region 5-7A) will travel to Brookwood at 4 p.m. Jan. 4.


Fairchild wins at Bradley Invitational

West Forsyth junior Dylan Fairchild won an individual championship Saturday in the 285-pound weight class at the Bradley Invitational in Cleveland, Tennessee. Fairchild pinned Blackman (Tenn.) wrestler Bowdy Boyce with 56 seconds left in the first period.

Danes finish 9th at tournament

Denmark hosted 'Twas the Fight Before Christmas on Saturday, finishing ninth out of 17 teams. 

Sophomore Zack Recker and junior Ethan Culbreth finished second, senior Arthur Marsden took third and junior Jake Swart placed sixth. Nick Schimmel won first place for the JV team and sophomore Hayden Hildebrand went 2-1 in the girls round robin.
